Fire safety is important wherever you are, but the most common solution is always to get away from it. However, that is not always the practical solution, especially if you’re at sea. Unless you’re planning to evacuate onto a lifeboat or are near shore, you might find yourself trapped with the fire.

But there are a few easy tips to help keep you safe at sea. Read on to find out more.

Invest In Equipment

Don’t skimp on fire safety on your vessel. Make sure you have fire extinguishers and blankets readily available. These should be dotted around the vessel, so you don’t find yourself trapped on one side of a boat with all the extinguishers on the other. Most fires are dealt with in the first few minutes of it breaking out, so equipment should be around to help combat it instantly.

Make sure you install systems such as a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide and gas detectors. These are imperative for warning you about any potential dangers on board.

Departing The Vessel

If your fire is out of control and you need to get off the boat, make sure your vessel is supplied with life jackets, life rafts and lifeboats. There should be enough life jackets for every person on board your boat, and enough space on rafts and boats for them all. Make your way calmly to the life rafts, making sure everybody is onboard one before you depart.

Fuel

Take care with any fuel you are using onboard, especially if it is in cylinders or barrels. If you’re using gas cylinders, ensure your gas detection system is installed nearby. Regularly check this area, ensuring it is clean and well-maintained. Isolate fuel away from any areas that could be dangerous, such as areas with open flames or where fuel could alight.
