Understanding Your Sprinkler System Options: A Brief Guide

November 13, 2024

As its elemental opposite, water is the go-to solution when it comes to extinguishing an aggressive fire. In particular, water extinguishers and fire hoses can be used to tackle Class A fires, where these are incidents that involve wood, paper, textiles or plastics. An influx of water aimed at the base of the flames will usually compromise the blaze, allowing for lives and infrastructure to be safeguarded.

Water sprinklers are also a useful tool when it comes to extinguishing indoor Class A fires. These are usually installed in spacious commercial buildings or communal residential areas, allowing for water droplets to be dispersed quickly and broadly.

Sprinklers are typically heat activated, where rising flames and smoke will automatically trigger the release of water droplets. Read on to find out more about some of the sprinklers available on the market today, with a look at their various functions and features.

Wet & Dry Systems

Not all fires can be extinguished effectively with water alone. As such, some sprinkler systems will be fitted with both wet and dry capabilities, allowing these installations to tackle a broader category of blaze. Dry components can release compressed air or nitrogen, where these substances work well at extinguishing fires in low temperature areas.

Pre-Action Fire Sprinklers

These sprinkler systems can be fitted with both wet and dry components, and are specially designed to prevent accidental or unnecessary releases. They are usually linked to a pre-action sensor or smoke detector, where this additional activation step helps to avoid unwanted discharges. Pre-action sprinklers are ideal for areas that would be highly sensitive to water, such as libraries or data centres.

Deluge Fire Systems

Some facilities will require a particularly intensive sprinkler installation, such as industrial spaces or factories. These sites can be fitted with a deluge fire system, where these are connected to a water supply and are designed so that all sprinkler heads will open simultaneously, allowing a ‘deluge’ of water to drench the area.

Commercial Sprinklers

Commercial sprinkler installations usually differ to residential options, as they will be specially designed to suit industrial environments or kitchen spaces. Typically, commercial sprinklers will release larger quantities of water, allowing for serious fires to be managed quickly.
